What expats and English-speaking residents should know about professional sofa cleaning
Ik krijg deze vraag opvallend vaak:
“Michael, how did you get into the upholstery cleaning business?”
Waarschijnlijk heeft het iets met mijn achtergrond te maken.
Het korte antwoord? Via Amerika.
Na de Tweede Wereldoorlog vertrokken een aantal tantes van mij naar de USA.
Eén van hen trouwde met een Amerikaan met de achternaam van Dijk — ja, echt.
Lang verhaal kort: via die kant van de familie raakte ik in contact met een neef die mede-oprichter was van Chem-Dry. Hij stapte er later uit, maar twee van zijn zoons startten daarna onder andere een bedrijf dat je in de VS zou kennen als Chicago Couch Cleaning.
Zo werd het zaadje geplant.
Wat in Amerika sofa cleaning heet, werd hier in Nederland simpelweg:
bank laten reinigen.
Of, iets internationaler gezegd: upholstery cleaning.

In het begin mailden we af en toe.
Ik kreeg filmpjes doorgestuurd van hoe zij werkten: grote trucks, vaste systemen, slangen door het huis, pure routine. In de VS is professional sofa cleaning gewoon onderhoud. Net als ramen lappen of de airco laten checken.
Het grote voordeel voor mij?
Ik had vanaf dag één toegang tot professionele upholstery cleaning producten die in Nederland nauwelijks bekend waren.
Toen Mobiele Cleaners begon te groeien — vooral door 5-sterren reviews en mond-tot-mond — kwamen ze voor familiebezoek naar Nederland.
En Igor, één van hen, wilde wel eens een dagje mee op pad.

Dat moment vergeet ik nooit.
Bij het uitladen keek Igor naar mijn bus en zei droog:

In Amerika rijden ze met enorme pick-ups waarin de apparatuur vast is ingebouwd.
Slangen uitrollen, naar binnen lopen, klaar.
Ik legde uit dat dit in Nederland iets anders werkt.
Probeer maar eens met vaste slangen een appartement op de derde etage in Eindhoven te bereiken.
Toen keek hij naar mijn machine:
“Your upholstery cleaning machine is not so big either.”
Mijn antwoord:
“Size doesn’t matter.”
Zelfs onze upholstery brushes zijn hier kleiner dan in de USA.
Dat leverde al de eerste lach op.
First stop: Breda – an 8-seat sofa that hadn’t been cleaned in 8 years
Onze eerste klant samen was in Breda.
Een grote 8-persoons bank, écht goed gebruikt:
chocoladevlekken, hondenhaar, vuil diep in de stof.
Igor werd ineens stil.
Hij keek naar de klant en vroeg:
“When was this sofa last cleaned?”
“Never,” zei ze.
“How old is the sofa?”
“Eight years.”
Hij zei even niets meer.
In de VS is dit ondenkbaar.
Daar hoort yearly upholstery cleaning gewoon bij de grote schoonmaak.
Het zit in het systeem. In het hoofd. In de cultuur.
Na de reiniging — vlekvrij, fris, zichtbaar opgeknapt — zei hij iets belangrijks:
“It’s not about the size of the machine. It’s the technique.”
Grappig detail: inmiddels werken zij óók met compactere machines.
Second stop: The Hague – when sofa cleaning goes too fast
De tweede afspraak was in Den Haag.
Een bank die stonk, terwijl deze kort daarvoor door een ander bedrijf was gereinigd.
De klant vertelde:
“Ze waren in een half uur klaar.”
Ik zei meteen: dat kan eigenlijk niet.
Zelfs met z’n tweeën waren wij anderhalf uur bezig.
Igor hield zich niet in en zei tegen de klant:
“The couch was cleaned too quickly and not properly.”
“This sofa looks like amateur cleaning work.”
Niet hard bedoeld. Wel eerlijk.

Maar niet voordat hij me nog één compliment gaf — en Amerikanen zijn daar vrij gul mee:
